Alajuela is hometown of the national hero Juan Santa María.
It is in Alajuela where the Juan Santa María Airport, also known as San Jose International Airport (SJO), is located. The province is also called the Province of the Mangos because it is here where mangos are produced.
As every important city in Costa Rica, the center of Alajuela has a Catholic Cathedral with a park in front of it. It has a chill population that is always walking around the streets and stores. Its average weather is usually around 65°F to 85°F.
There is not much to see in Downtown Alajuela, but just a few miles away you can find the ZooAve. A must see Zoo with Costa Rican fauna.
Alajuela is a large sized territory. You can find a large variety of places to go see:
- Poás Volcano: Located in a National Park, this volcano is one of the major attractions. The volcano is usually steaming and smoking. Next to the crater there is a lake formed by the volcano activity.
- La Fortuna: A town located in San Carlos, Alajuela. La Fortuna is known for its high touristic attraction. There are lots of activities around the town: souvenirs, hiking, ziplining tours, restaurants, rivers (including the beautiful Light Blue River!), lakes, hot springs, sightseeing, riding tours, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, the Arenal Volcano.
- Estado de Doka and Alsacia Starbucks Coffee Farm: two farms famous for their tours around the coffee plantations that explain the entire coffee making process. You can enjoy your time around the farms and enjoy of fresh coffee.
On your way to any of the attractions above, you will find beautiful views from the mountains. You will notice quick weather changes, farms, nurseries, waterfalls next to the street, monkeys, pizotes, birds, spiders, among more wildlife. Just keep your eyes open for all what Alajuela has to offer!
