Limón

Located in the Caribbean of Costa Rica and home of the Afro-Costaricans. 

It is the second largest city of the country and has two important ports.

Limón’s roots go back to Italians, Chinese, and Jamaican laborers that were brought to Costa Rica to built the railroad. This province is full of culture and delicious dishes. This Afro-Caribbean community speaks Spanish and Creole.

There is not much to do in Puerto Limón except for the Day of the Cultures (Columbus Day) in which Limón celebrates with carnivals and parades.

Outside of Downtown Limón, the following places are a MUST to visit:

  • Tortuguero National Park: the trail along the beach takes you to the turtle nesting site, but you will need a boat or kayak to go enjoy the rest of the park. You might be able to spot Green Sea Turtles, leatherback, and hawksbill turtles nesting in between february and october. This park is 19,000 hectares.
  • Punta Uva: white sand and reef protected water. Located within the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge giving you better chances to spot wildlife. You can find plenty of hotels and restaurants around the area.Playa_de_Punta_Uva,_Costa_Rica.jpg
  • Cahuita: it has national parks with lots of biodiversity. Its beach is one of the least undeveloped ones and only one of them is safe for swimming. You can go scuba-diving and find a great variety of biodiversity such as turtles, eels, manta rays, sea cucumbers, fish, sharks, among others.
  •  Pacuare River: popular for water rafting. It borders the Talamanca Mountain Range. You will be able to enjoy of warm water, waterfalls, and beautiful rainforest views including animals such as parrots, toucans, deer, jawars, monkeys, ocelots, and more.
